The Ultimate Staffing & Survival Guide

The Ultimate Staffing & Survival Guide

The Calgary Stampede is “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” for a reason. For ten days every July, “Cal-gree” (remember: swallow that second “a”—it rhymes with “Alba-gree”) trades corporate attire for cowboy boots, denim, and a massive dose of community spirit. Whether you are a born-and-raised Calgarian, a Canadian road-tripper, or an international tourist walking into Cowtown for the very first time, Stampede is an unmissable spectacle.

But behind the scenes of the world’s biggest party is a massive logistics machine powered by thousands of local workers and temporary staff. Here is how to navigate the madness as an employer, an employee, or a festival-goer.

Fast Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

  • The Pancake Phenomenon: The famous Stampede free pancake breakfasts started in 1923. A cowboy named Jack Morton pulled up his chuckwagon downtown, started flipping hotcakes for hungry spectators, and inadvertently created a century-long tradition.
  • The Midway Madness: Every year, the food vendors try to out-weird each other. We have seen everything from cricket pizza and pickle-flavoured cotton candy to deep-fried butter. If it can be put on a stick and dipped in a fryer, you can bet that it will be sold at Stampede.  This year we are seeing BBQ rib cookies, butter soft serve ice cream and moose pizza- you read that right!
  • Economic Juggernaut: It isn’t just a party. The Stampede injects well over $500 million into the Alberta economy annually, making it a massive driver for local hospitality, tourism, and retail businesses.

Stampede Linguistics: How to Sound Like a Local

If you want to blend in with the locals—and your coworkers—you need to master the vocabulary. Get these wrong, and the entire city will instantly know you just stepped off a plane.

  • Yahoo! (pronounced: YAH-hoo): This is the official, holy grail greeting of the Calgary Stampede. You say it when you greet a client, when a cowboy stays on a bull for eight seconds, when you get a fresh plate of pancakes, or just randomly in the office hallway. It is the ultimate expression of western enthusiasm.
  • Woo-hoo! (pronounced: woo-HOO):Do not say this. This is the ultimate Stampede sin. “Woo-hoo” is what people yell at a regular hockey game or a standard birthday party. If you yell “Woo-hoo!” at a chuckwagon race or a networking event, a local will gently—but firmly—correct you. Stick to Yahoo!

The Stampede Dress Code: Corporate Western

For ten days, standard business formal is completely dead. However, there is a fine line between “festive professional” and “I got lost on my way to a Halloween store.”

  • The Right Way: A clean pair of blue jeans (no massive holes), a crisp plaid or pearl-snap button-down shirt, a nice belt, and cowboy boots. If you wear a Stetson to a corporate meeting, ensure you take it off when sitting down so you don’t block the view of the whiteboard.
  • The Wrong Way: Showing up to a client lunch in a full fringe vest with no shirt underneath, daisy dukes, or an oversized, plastic neon cowboy hat you won at a midway game. Keep it classy, Calgary. You still have a job to do.

The Etiquette of the “Stampede No-Show”

Let’s face it: Stampede involves late nights, loud music, and perhaps a few too many beverages at a corporate tent. If you physically cannot make it to your shift the next morning, there is a right way and a wrong way to handle it.

  • The Right Way: Communication and honesty. If you know you’ve overextended yourself, call your staffing supervisor or manager as early as humanly possible. Give them enough runway to find a temp staffingreplacement. Acknowledging that you pushed it too hard but respecting your team’s time goes a long way. Better yet? Pace yourself and show up for your shift. The coffee is brewing, and the pancakes are on the griddle.
  • The Wrong Way (The Absolute Worst Way): Ghosting. Sending a text message 10 minutes after your shift started that simply reads “sry sick”—or worse, just not showing up at all while your Instagram stories from Nashville North are still actively updating. That is a quick way to turn your temporary job during Stampede into a permanent vacation.

Why You Need to Enjoy Every Minute

  • For Calgarians & Employees: Yes, the traffic can be a nightmare, and the C-Train is packed to the brim. But this is our city’s time to shine. It is the ultimate networking event wrapped in a festival. Dust off the boots, embrace the temporary chaos, and hit up a tent or a corporate backyard BBQ.
  • For Fellow Canadians: Stampede is a showcase of Western Canadian heritage. From the high-octane chuckwagon races to the world-class rodeo athletes, it is a masterclass in community volunteerism and hospitality that will make you proud of our homegrown talent.
  • For International Tourists: Throw away your assumptions about Canada being quiet and reserved. Put on a Stetson, stretch your vocal cords, and experience real western hospitality.

Stampede is loud, dusty, chaotic, and incredibly fun. Lean into the country music, eat something deep-fried that you’ll regret later, and enjoy the ride!

A Personal Note: Celebrating the Heroes of the Chaos

Before the boots are packed away for another year, I want to take a moment to share a huge personal thank you to the real engine behind this entire festival.

A massive shout-out goes to the Calgary Stampede Committee members and the incredible network of community builders who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the magic happen. To the thousands of passionate volunteers who log endless hours, and the dedicated temporary and permanent staff working right in the thick of the beautiful chaos—thank you.

The team at About Staffing knows exactly what it takes to keep a business running smoothly during our city’s busiest ten days, and we are immensely proud to stand alongside the community builders, workers, and volunteers who make Calgary shine on the world stage. Yahoo!
